After completing my fellowship training in the early 1990s, I joined a tertiary care center in Chicago. I was surprised to see a plethora of pediatric cardiology programs, all in one city. The pediatric cardiology center where I trained was in a small town in the southeastern region of the USA
The transition from residency to subspecialty fellowship in a procedurally driven field such as pediatric cardiology is challenging for trainees. We describe and assess the educational value of a pediatric cardiology ‘‘boot camp’’ educational tool designed to help prepare trainees for cardiology fellowship.
In the words of Albert Einstein, ‘‘The only source of knowledge is experience’’. In this article, we will attempt to examine how we in the medical world attempt to apply our own knowledge and experience to clinical decision making and how the filter of one’s own perspective can lead to flawed decision making.
In this issue, we continue our reviews of recent advances and novel approaches in paediatric cardiology, focusing on the amazing advances in understanding the genetics of childhood cardiovascular disease. It has now been 27 years since the initiation of the Human Genome Project, and 14 years since its completion.
Diphtheria continues to be reported from many parts of the world. Complete heart block is rare but often fatal complication of diphtheric myocarditis. We report six children with diphtheric myocarditis who presented with complete heart block. Three patients survived, one with persistent complete heart block. Aggressive supportive management including transvenous pacing may result in complete…
The natural history of cirrhosis can be described as a continuum from a compensated phase to decompensation and liver failure, marked by the development of ascites, overt hepatic encephalopathy, or variceal haemorrhage, occurring at a rate of 5–7% per year.
Beta-blockers are the cornerstone treatment for congestive heart failure (HF). Current HF guidelines commonly recommend β-blockers for the treatment of HF with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The effect of β-blockers, however, is less clear for HF patients with preserved LVEF, unstable severe acute HF, or right ventricular failure. This review summarizes the effect of β-b…
The correlation of the peak systolic velocity (PSV) and the peak velocity ratio (PVR, calculated as intrastenotic PSV divided by proximally recorded PSV) with percent diameter reduction was studied in 62 patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease. PSV values correlated well with angiographic diameter reduction (r =0.81, n = 106 stenoses), but due to large variability the sensitivity an…
