The continuous heart failure spectrum: moving beyond an ejection fraction cla…

Triposkiadis F

Randomized clinical trials initially used heart failure (HF) patients with low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) to select study populations with high risk to enhance statistical power. However, this use of LVEF in clinical trials has led to oversimplification of the scientific view of a complex syndrome. Descriptive terms such as ‘HFrEF’ (HF with reduced LVEF), ‘HFpEF’ (HF with…

ACE (I/D) polymorphism and response to treatment in coronary artery disease: …

Kitsios G

In view of available evidence, genetic testing of ACE I/D polymorphism prior to clinical decision making is not currently justified. The relation between ACE genetic variation and response to treatment in CAD remains an unresolved issue. The results of long-term and properly designed prospective studies hold the promise for pharmacogenetically tailored therapy in CAD.

Renal handling of zinc in chronic kidney disease patients and the role of cir…

Damianaki K

Zinc levels are lower in CKD, and not compensated by reduced renal zinc excretion. The inverse association between urinary zinc excretion and uromodulin possibly points to an impaired tubular activity, which could partly account for zinc imbalance in CKD. These data suggest that zinc status is associated with renal function decline, but further studies elucidating the underlyingmechanisms and …

NAVARRO JV

Anemia and malnutrition are significant com- served with rHuEPO. Furthermore, compared with rHuEPO, complications in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Previous studies androgen administration was associated with beneficial effects in hemodialysis have shown that androgens are effective as on nutritional status. The mechanism of action of androgens therapy for anemia; however, this has not be…

International trends in erythropoietin use and hemoglobin levels in hemodialy…

McFarlane PA

Hemoglobin levels and the dose of erythropoiesisstimulating agents (ESAs) have risen over time in hemodialysis patients within the United States. There are concerns that these trends may be driven by reimbursement policies that provide potential incentives to increase this use. To determine this we studied trends in the use of ESA and hemoglobin levels in hemodialysis patients and the relations…

Hemoglobin, erythropoietin and systemic inflammation in exacerbations of chro…

Markoulaki D

In this observational study we have shown that during admission for ECOPD Hb levels are decreased and EPO levels are increased. We have also identified a negative association between Hb and EPO. The above association is mainly related to increased IL-6 levels, indicating a possible EPO resistance through the mechanism of increased systemic inflammatory process.

SNYDER JJ

Erythropoietic agents, a cornerstone of management, are a major component of the cost of renal replacement therapy. The objectives of this study were to compare (on a month-by-month basis) U.S. hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients in terms of the proportion of patients receiving erythropoietin, erythropoietin doses, and hemoglobin levels after initiation of erythropoietin.

The Role of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Polymorphism in Congestive Heart Fa…

Pilati M

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a zinc metallopeptidase, with primary known functions of converting angiotensin I into the vasoactive and aldosterone-stimulating peptide angiotensin II and inactivating bradykinin. There is high variability among individuals in ACE concentrations, mainly due to the presence of a genetic polymorphism. The ACE gene has, in fact, insertion/ deletion polym…

Updated Neonatal Resuscitation Guidelines 2015 – Major Changes
Comment Share
BANSAL SC

The latest guidelines on neonatal resuscitation from American Heart Association (AHA) [1] and European Resuscitation Council (ERC) [2] were released in October 2015. There have been slight variations between these guidelines; although they use nearly identical literature for evidence evaluation. We present here the major changes in the recent guidelines [3,4], and comparison between the ERC a…
