Absorption of micronized progesterone from a nonliquefying vaginal cream*
An effective and convenient method to administer progesterone (P) would be useful. Injections assure reliable absorption1 but are painful. Vaginal P suppositories avoid the pain of injection and are well absorbed, but suppositories sustain P levels less effectively. Suppositories are difficult to place high
in the vagina and liquefy at body temperature, which leads to substantial vaginal discharge of the drug and a greasy vulvar residue.
