A Survey of Some Indian Marine Plants for Antiviral Activity

Extracts of seaweeds, seagrasses and mangroves from the southeast coast of India have been tested in vitro for antiviral activity against Newcastle disease, vaccinia, Semliki Forest, encephalomyocarditis and hepatitis Β viruses. In the primary test, of 73 extracts examined, 43 exhibited antiviral activity (> 50%) against at least any one of the viruses. Only two extracts, leaf of Bruguiera cylindrica and bark of Rhizophora mucronata showed activity against all the viruses tested
