Midazolam Premedication in Children : Comparison of Nasal and Sublingual Routes


In a prospective randomized study efficacy of nasal and sublingual administration of midazolam as premedication in children was evaluated in 60 children aged between 4-10 years with ASA physical status I and II. Patients were divided into two groups of 30 patients each and received midazolam 0.2mgkg-1 either intranasally or sublingually in a randomized manner. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and degree of sedation were recorded before and at 2 minute intervals upto 10 minutes after administration of the drug. Patient’s response to drug administration, child parent separation and venipuncture at the time of induction were also noted. Sublingual route was better liked by children than intranasal route.
