An Approach to Management of Gas in the Elderly
In this article I shall review the physiology, clinical manifestations, and management of gaseousness in the elderly. While not an infrequent complaint, little scientific study has been done of the causes or management of this problem. The regulation of bowel gas is surprisingly complex. When problems occur, it is usually either because of excessive swallowing of air or because of the intraluminal production of gas by colonic bacteria.
