FACTORS AFFECTING METABOLIC ACTIVITY OF THE INTESTINAL MICROFLORA


The diverse metabolic activities of the mammalian gut microflora are well established (see reviews by Scheline, 1973; Rowland and Walker,
1983; Rowland et al., 1985). It is also clear that many of these reactions catalyzed by the microflora alter the toxicological properties of ingested
chemicals and of substances produced by the host and secreted into the gut lumen, for example, bile acids and biliary conjugates. In some cases,
microbial metabolism leads to detoxication of a xenobiotic; in others, activation to more toxic, carcinogenic, or mutagenic products occurs
(Rowland and Walker, 1983). Examples of some of these reactions and the enzymes involved are given in Table 1 together with their toxicological consequences
