Breast cancer trial with erythropoietin terminated unexpectedly
Many clinical studies have shown an association between tumour oxygenation, higher haemoglobin concentrations, and improved survival in patients with cancer.1–6 And, in a recent prospective, randomised study, a subpopulation of anaemic patients with metastatic breast cancer were shown to survive longer if given erythropoietin to correct their haemoglobin concentration during chemotherapy than if treated with placebo
