Metabolic encephalopathies frequently cause the consultation of a neurologist, both in the emergency room as well as for in-patients of the departments of internal medicine or surgery. More than 2/3 of the patients who are referred to an emergency unit with altered consciousness
show electrolyte disturbances, endocrinologic disorders, metabolic encephalopathies or intoxications (Plum & Posner 1982).
