Cefpirome: a review of its antibacterial activity, pharmacokinetic properties and clinical efficacy in the treatment of severe nosocomial infections and febrile neutropenia


Cefpirome is an injectable extended-spectrum or 'fourth generation ' cephalosporin. Its antibacterial activity encompasses many ofthe pathogens involved in
hospital-acquired infections such as Enterobacteriaceae, methicillin-susceptible
Staphylococcus aureus , coagulase-negative staphylococci and viridans group
streptococci. Cefpirome also has in vitro activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae regardless ofpenicillin susceptibility. It is stable against most plasmidand chromosome-mediated ~-lactamases with the exception of the extendedspectrum plasmid-mediated SHV enzymes
