Hemosiderosis (AmE) or haemosiderosis (BrE) is a form of iron overload disorder resulting in the accumulation of hemosiderin
Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, collectively referred to as venous thromboembolism, constitute a major global burden of disease. The diagnostic work-up of suspected deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism includes the sequential application of a clinical decision rule and D-dimer testing. Imaging and anticoagulation can be safely withheld in patients who are unlikely to have …
As anaesthetists, we like to believe that the i.v. fluid we administer during surgery is based on a careful consideration of the contemporaneous clinical situation in the particular individual under our care. We estimate deficits; we use clinical assessment and haemodynamic monitoring to characterize circulating blood volume, and we respond to changes with fluid challenges and vasopressors
About 230 million patients undergo surgery each year.1 Reported mortality rates for elective non-cardiac surgery range from 1% to 4%.2 Although less than 15% of inpatient procedures are performed in high-risk patients, such patients account for 80% of deaths
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), healthy ageing refers to an individual’s capacity to do the things that are important to the person. Healthy ageing is the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age (1).
The aim of this study was to determine whether cognitive reserve in the elderly affects the evolution of cognitive performance and what its relationship is with active lifestyles in later life
This article examines the determinants of healthy aging using Grossman’s framework of a health production function. Healthy aging, sometimes described as successful aging, is produced using a variety of inputs, determined in early life, young adulthood, midlife, and later life. A healthy aging production function is estimated using nationally representative data from the 2010 and 2012 He…
Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) infection. Light microscopy of urogenital smears is used as a simple tool to diagnose urogenital gonorrhoea in many resource-limited settings. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of light microscopy to diagnose urogenital gonorrhoea as compared with a PCR-based test.
Recent antimicrobial resistance data for Neisseria gonorrhoeae are lacking in Uganda, where, until 2010, ciprofloxacin was the nationally recommended first-line treatment of presumptive gonorrhea. This study assessed the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of N. gonorrhoeae isolates cultured from female sex workers (FSWs) in Kampala.
The results of Gram stains and cultures from 145 women with uncomplicated ano-genital gonorrhoea are presented. The site which gave the highest yield of gonococci was the cervix. Equally good results were obtained with Stuart's transport medium and direct plating in the clinic. Positive results from rectal specimens alone were obtained from 8-4% of the 119 women in whom the rectum was exami…
